Why Are Date Formats Different Around the World?
The diversity of date formats reflects historical and cultural differences. The US uses month/day/year (MM/DD/YYYY), while most of Europe and Brazil use day/month/year (DD/MM/YYYY) — causing frequent confusion in international documents (is 04/05/2025 April 5th or May 4th?).
The international standard ISO 8601 (YYYY-MM-DD) was created to eliminate this ambiguity. It is widely used in science, technology, and information systems because it allows simultaneous alphabetical and chronological sorting.
The Unix Timestamp counts the seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC (the "Unix Epoch"). It is the most common format in programming and APIs because it is timezone-independent and makes mathematical date calculations trivial.
